Socially nutrition can be a handy topic as more often than not I meet people who want to loose weight or are unhealthy and are keen to ask my opinion (get a freebie). Whilst this should be great for me, it can frequently lead to frustration. A lot of people read the Daily Mail and quote various articles at me such as "red meat causes cancer". I often feel quite stressed that people ask my advice then tell me they know better!! Most of the time social occasions pass me by. I have periods where my contribution is zero despite knowing all the people there. Unless its my specialist subject which I have knowledge, I loose the ability to talk freely and by the time I've thought of something to say the conversation has moved on. Frequently I'll see a route in which Nutrition links to the topic and use that.
Effective verbal and non-verbal communication is essential in both social and working environments. However, we all communicate differently and must be aware that for our message to be heard we have to alter our style. If you want to engage me in conversation just ask me about bikes or diet then sit back and learn.
