We all have a set point and we are biologically and genetically determined to weigh within a certain weight range. So theirs not a great deal we can do about weight...argh thats not what most of you wanted to hear. Luckily weight means sod all and we can reduce the amount of fat we carry by working with set point theory rather than against it. Most of us say we want to loose weight but we actually mean we would like to be leaner. Our bodies have the mechanisms to regulate its weight within its optimal weight range. If you eat more than you need to maintain your body weight, your body temperature will rise and your metabolism speeds up to burn the extra calories. Holy cow, maybe thats why I spend so much time worrying about your body temperature. Its also why I caused a scene by loosing stupid amounts of body fat on my year long 6000 cal a day diet. If you follow the typical method of DIEting and decide not to eat enough to maintain your weight, then hey presto your basal metabolism slows down to spare the available calories and your body temperature decreases...brrrrr. Oh yeah, and hunger tends to kick in as the body tries to regulate once again by desperately sending you messages to eat. Maybe this is why I tell you all never to let yourself get to the point of feeling hungry.
When restrict the amount of food you eat drop below your natural weight range (remember before you get hysterical, weight range not fat range), your body will respond by increasing your hunger, increase your obsessional fixation with food (you may start a baking cakes for friends and family), and decrease your metabolism so then when you do finally crack you store fat to protect you from your disasterous diets. These mechanisms are in place to keep you safe and alive, sure they make you fat if you try and trick it but its better than being dead because you failed to provide energy and your body had no mechanism to survive the famine.Think about it sensibly folks, your body is designed to keep you alive (by any means) in times of starvation. I've stated it for years and been called a mad man many times. Body fat and obesity is a sign of malnourishment, your not feeding yourself well enough (quantity) so the body is doing a pretty damn good job of surviving.
The trick to loosing body fat is to eat, eat regularly and eat to satisfaction. I proved it with my little experiment in 2003 and I've proved it time and time again, via eating to satisfaction everyday, the body has no need to store energy as it knows it will always receive a delivery before its needed. Theirs only one winner in the DIEt world and thats the snake oil salesman selling in you. The DIEt industry know all of this (or they should), but if everyone followed their actual physiological needs Weighwatchers, slimming world, Jenny Craig (not my wife), Lighter Life, and all the other con artists would be finally out of business of making peoples lives a misery.
